Learn the pros and cons. Plus, take the poll to see what other moms choose.
You're going back to work, and you are on the look-out for quality childcare for your kid. One of the first things to consider is which childcare arrangement to go for: A daycare center or at-home sitter?

Each has its advantages as well as disadvantages, so you may find it helpful to review the pros and cons list below and find out which option suits you and your baby's needs best.

Childcare center

Advantages
  • Exposes your child to a diverse group of playmates and providers.
  • Provides a structured environment
  • Usually less expensive
  • You don't have to worry about finding back-up care if a provider falls ill.

Disadvantages
  • Exposure to more children may increase the chance of your child catching an illness.
  • The need to transport your child to and from the center everyday.
  • Because the center has to take care of many kids, your child may get less individualized attention.
  • The center may not assign a particular primary provider to your child.

At-home sitter

Advantages
  • Your child gets one-on-one care.
  • Your child gets to stay home in a familiar environment.
  • Less exposure to illnesses.
  • No need to fetch your child to and from a facility.

Disadvantages
  • Need to plan back-up care when your sitter falls ill.
  • Usually more expensive.
  • Less social interaction with other kids.
  • You can't easily monitor the quality of care your child is getting.
